Liminal Game was a fun experiment that MADE games worked on for a liminal-themed game jam! The idea was to create a liminal horror game about a patient in a hospital with a breathing condition who goes on a journey in the middle of the night for a glass of water!
I was the lead designer on the project and worked with our programmer and art team to build a spooky ambiance with immersive gameplay that reflected the modern era the game took place in while also reflecting the main character's breathing condition.
We came up with the idea of the character using their phone as a flashlight as well as using it to track the condition of their heart and breathing. I did my best to emphasize the immersion by making the phone feel like a real object that existed in the world.
We had a lot of ideas for the game that didn't end up making it into the final prototype, which made it about as far as the second video shown below. We wanted the player's journey to get weirder as they delved further into the hospital, such as the appearance of infinite staircases, flooded hallways, and a cafeteria with furniture that floated above a void. I'm still very proud of how far we came though, I'm especially proud of my level design. Well, I'd say I'm proud of the ambiance and immersion I created, rather than my level design, as it really was just a simple hospital floor.
